ESL has announced that they are going to hold the third Intel Extreme Masters event in the biggest Australian city – Sydney. The event will begin in May 2019 and will feature 16 teams competing for a $250,000 prize pool.
The organizers will invite eight teams to their event, while the other half of participants will be decided through the regional qualifiers – Oceania and Asia will get 3 slots at the event, while North America and Europe will be represented by one qualified team each.
The main part of the event will be held on May 30th – April 5th. First, sixteen teams will compete in two GSL groups with opening matches being best-of-one and the remaining series being best-of-three. Then the winner of each group will advance directly to the semifinals, while the teams placed 2nd and 3rd will make it to the quarterfinals. The playoffs stage will feature a single-elimination bracket, where the quarterfinals and semifinals will be best-of-three and the grand finals will be best-of-five. The final days of the event will be played at Qudos Bank Arena with live audience.
Just as this year, IEM Sydney 2019 will be part of the first season of Intel Grand Slam.
The previous IEM Sydney event was held on May 1st – 6th. In the grand finals of the event FaZe Clan defeated Astralis with the score of 3-0, receiving $100,000 in prize money.
