Valve have finally done what Dota 2 fans have been asking for years, literally – the developers have launched Diretide, a Halloween event last seen seven years ago, in 2013. The event introduces a new game mode, which is free for everyone, and a handful of unique rewards. It will last until December 22nd.
The new version of the Diretide game mode retains most of its traditional features: teams of five players will compete with each other in a race to get as many candies to their trove as they can. The candies, here called taffy, can be obtained by killing creeps or by stealing from the opposing team. Roshan is roaming the land, so players will have to have at least some candies on them to appease the big beast. The victory will be awarded to the team that manages to score the highest amount of candies in three rounds.
During the event, all players will be able to get Diretide points by participating in the new game mode or by simply playing the usual matches. Every 100 points allow players to get one of 75 rewards, among which are item sets, couriers, wards, effects and more. One of the rewards is Hallowed Chest of the Diretide – a locked treasure containing 60 items, which can be opened with a key that costs $2.50.
Contrary to their usual approach, this time Valve allowed selling the obtained items through the marketplace immediately after getting them. Moreover, selling and purchasing is now done directly through the client. Besides that, the developers have returned a recycling system – you can trade ten items of one tier for one item of the tier above, up to tier 4.
