Andrey "Afoninje" Afonin has left Gambit Esports, according to the organization’s page in a social network. The player becomes a free agent and will continue his professional career.
Afoninje joined Gambit Esports in October 2018. While being one of the strongest teams in the CIS region, they often found themselves being one step from qualifying to LAN-events. However, the team managed to place 2nd at both The Bucharest Minor and ESL One Katowice 2019, as well as finish 7-8th at EPICENTER Major. The team was one of the main favourites of the CIS qualifier for The International 2019. However, they failed to make it even through the group stage. According to multiple sources, the team’s poor performance was a result of an internal conflict between Afoninje and Nikita "Daxak" Kuzmin. The player was also penalized by the organization for abandoning a game early, forcing the team to call a gg.
