IEM StarCraft II World Championship: Rogue Defeats Classic
The first international World Championship Series event of 2018 – Intel Extreme Masters Season XII – World Championship – has concluded. In the grand finals the reigning world champion Lee "Rogue" Byung Ryul defeated his opponent – another prominent South Korean player Kim "Classic" Doh Woo.
The event was held from February 26th to March 4th in Katowice, Poland. The initial prize pool was set at $250,000 and subsequently was increased by another $150,000 from War Chest purchases, totalling $400,000. The tournament started with an offline qualifier, where 64 players were divided into four double-elimination brackets with top 3 players from each bracket advancing to the next stage. In the group stage the participants were seeded into four groups of six players with a round-robin format and best-of-three matches, the best team from each group advanced directly to the quarterfinals, while the teams placed second and third qualified for the Round of 12. In the playoffs stage 12 players competed in a single-elimination bracket with best-of-five regular matches and best-of-seven grand finals.
While Classic placed first in Group D with the 5-0 score and advanced directly to the quarterfinals, his future opponent Rogue placed second in Group C and had to make it all the way from the Round of 12. In the playoffs Classic looked confident and defeated Dear (3-1) and Serral (3-0), while Rogue started his run to the top by defeating Hurricane (3-0) and TY (3-1), but in the semifinals against Maru the current world champion went soft, so the series started with two consecutive victories of Maru, but at the end Rogue managed to bounce back and close the series 3-2 in his favour. It looked like the semifinals series gave him momentum, as in the grand finals he destroyed his opponent Classic with an impressive 4-0 score, getting $150,800 in prize money, 3000 WCS Global Points and a slot at WCS Global Finals.
