Serral Becomes the First non-Korean Winner of WCS Global Finals in History of StarCraft II
For the first time in the history of StarCraft II a non-Korean player managed to become the champion of WCS Global Finals. The Finnish player Joona "Serral" Sotala defeated his opponent from South Korea Kim "Stats" Dae Yeob in the grand finals this year’s world championship with a confident map score of 4-2. The winner received $280,000 in prize money, while the runner-up was awarded $112,000.
Serral reached the grand finals by defeating Dark in the quarterfinals (3:0) and Rogue in the semifinals (3:1). Earlier he placed first in Group B, where he defeated 2-0 both sOs and Zest. Stats also qualified for the playoffs from the first place of Group C, where he managed to outplay Has (2:0) and ShoWTimE (2:0). Later in the playoffs the Korean player defeated SpeCial (3:1) and sOs (3:0). In the grand finals Serral won first three maps in a row, then lost the following two maps and managed to secure the final sixth map, becoming the first non-Korean winner of WCS Global Finals since its inception in 2012.
The event was held on October 26th – November 3rd in Anaheim, USA as part of BlizzCon. The tournament’s line-up consisted on 16 players, while its prize pool was set at $700,000.
