RIOT Games Reveal Preferred Organizations for the 2021 LCK Franchise

Following the successful example of LCS, LEC and LPL, the Korean league LCK is also transitioning to the franchise model. RIOT Games have accepted 21 applications from various organizations and selected ten preferred teams, with another five being on the “waitlist”.

RIOT Games have been selecting the organizations for the last few months, evaluating their owners and business plans with the help of external experts and accounting firms. The preferred organizations are not guaranteed to partake in the league though, as RIOT Games will begin negotiations with the selected ten organizations in the coming weeks. If some of them will not be able to come to an agreement, their slot will pass to the next candidate on the waitlist.

  • Proffered organizations: ADE Sports (Damwon Gaming), AfreecaTV (Afreeca Freecs), Brion Esports (hyFresh Blade), DRX, Gen.G Esports, Hanwha Life Insurance (Hanwha Life Esports), KT Sports (KT Rolster), Sandbox Gaming, SK Telecom CS (T1), Team Dynamics
  • Waitlist: APE Sports (SoelHaeOne Prince), Bigpicture Gaming (Element Mystic), Sema Esports (Jin Air Greenwings), Sono Hotel & Resort (Awesome Spear), Optimumzone Esports (OZ Gaming)

LCK will become a franchise league in 2021. The transition means that the partnered teams will participate in revenue sharing and will not face relegations. This system is already successfully implemented in other three regions – Europe (LEC), North America (LCS) and China (LPL).
