Epic Games to Invest $100,000,000 in Fortnite Esports Scene
Epic Games, the publisher of one of the most popular video games by today Fortnite Battle Royal, announced that they will provide a whooping $100,000,000 to fund prize pool of future competitive season.
According to the official statement, all that money will be provided for the 2018 – 2019 season. We still don’t know how the competitive scene of Fortnite will look like and how exactly these resources will be spent. We can assume that Epic Games will organize all events on their own, and their total prize pool will be $100,000,000. In this case we can compare this sum to the other popular esports titles. For example, Dota 2 is known as a game with the biggest prize pools among esports titles: the combined prize pool of all Dota 2 events since 2011 is $141,237,712. Both League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have a little more than $53,000,000. It should be mentioned that this includes the money from third-parties and crowdfunding. It is possible that Epic Games will also use crowdfunding, and in this case they will be able to bypass the entire lifetime of prize pools in Dota 2 in just one season. They promised to share details on the upcoming season soon.
Some of the prominent organizations have already started to enter the professional Fortnite scene. Some of them already have complete rosters, such as Team Secret, Team SoloMid and FaZe Clan, while the other organizations have at least one player, such as Luminosity Gaminb, Cloud9 and Fnatic.
