ESL One Comes Back to Hamburg with Expanded Format
ESL announced their new Dota 2 event, which will be held in Hamburg, Germany this October. In comparison to its 2017 iteration, ESL One Hamburg 2018 will have more participating teams and a longer duration.
Just as last year, the tournament will take place on October at Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany. This time however the format of the event got expanded: the list of participants now includes 16 teams instead of 8, its duration increased from 4 to 6 days. The group stage will take place on October 23-25, the playoffs will be held on October 26-28.
The prize pool and exact format of the competition for ESL One Hamburg 2018 haven’t been announced yet. Technically October 2018 is in the next Dota 2 season, and we obviously still don’t know how it will look like. If Valve are to keep its current Dota Pro Circuit model, ESL One Hamburg 2018 is likely to be part of it, just like in the previous year. It will undoubtedly affect the event’s prize pool.
ESL One Hamburg 2017 was privileged to be the first major tournament of the 2017-2018 professional season. As the tournament had been scheduled long before Valve introduced their new DPC system, it featured only 8 teams, two GSL groups and a single-elimination bracket for 4 teams. In the grand finals Virtus.pro defeated Team Secret 2-0, receiving $500,000 in prize money and 750 DPC Points. In addition to that, the VP’s captain Alexei "Solo" Berezin became MVP of the event and received a Mercedes-Benz car from the tournament’s sponsor. The next major tournament hosted by ESL – ESL One Katowice 2018 – already featured 16 teams, and was also won by Virtus.pro. The recently announced ESL One Birmingham 2018 will feature 12 teams and take place on May 23-27 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
