League of Legends World Championship: Dates and Cities

This year League of Legends World Championship will take place in October-November. Recently Riot Games has revealed where and when each stage of tournament will take place.

The entire of 2018 World Championship will be held in South Korea, in four cities.

  • Play-in Stage, October 1-4 & 6-7, Seoul – Twelve teams that were not invited to the main stage will battle it out for the remaining four spots in the group stage
  • Group Stage, October 10-17, Busan – Sixteen teams will be split into four groups with a double round robin format and best-of-one matches, with top two teams from each group advancing to the next stage, which is a knockout stage with a single-elimination bracket and best-of-five matches
  • Quarterfinals, October 20-21, Busan
  • Semifinals, October 27-28, Gwangju
  • Grand Finals, November 3, Incheon

This year Riot Games decided to reduce the length of the tournament so the participants don’t have to stay in foreign countries for so long. The developers also apologized that they are announcing information about the championship that late – although they started to scout for cities and venues as early as late last year, they faced some difficulties with locking down a location for the finals. Head of Global Esports Events in Riot Games Derrick Asiedu mentioned that they still do not have a locked venue for finals. In future they want to commit to a multi-year roadmap, complete with cities and venues.
