WESG 2017 Dota 2 Finals: Team Russia Defeats paiN Gaming

Team Russia, which consists mainly of Virtus.pro players, defeated the Brazilian team paiN Gaming in the grand finals of WESG 2017, a $1,500,000 Dota 2 competition.

The final stage of World Electronic Sports Games took place on March 13-18 at Hainan International Convention & Exhibition Center in Haikou, China on March 13-18 and featured 30 teams competing for a $1,500,000 prize pool. The group stage consisted of two phases: first 30 teams were seeded into eight groups with best-of-one series, top two teams from each group advanced to the second phase. Then sixteen teams were placed into four groups with best-of-two series, with top two teams from each group qualifying for the playoffs. The playoffs stage was held in a single-elimination format with best-of-three matches.

In the playoffs Team Russia defeated SG e-sports (2-0) and Team Hellas (2-0), while paiN Gaming managed to win against Keen Gaming (2-1) and Rock.Y (2-1). The grand finals concluded with a 2-1 score in favour of the Russian national team, securing them $800,000 in prize money. Team Hellas defeated Rock.Y in the 3rd place match.
